Project initiation consists of the processes that facilitate the formal authorization to start a new project or project phase. The project initiation processes and deliverables may include:
- Pre-Project Planning
- Project Origination
- Preliminary Review and Assignment
- Preliminary Project Scoping and Estimating
- Project Scope of Work
- Project Estimate
- Project Schedule (preliminary)
- Construction Directive Authorization (as applicable)
- Risk Registry (as applicable)
- Project Initiation Form / Project Planning Guide (PPG)
- Assignment of Responsible Individual (RI) and Authorizing Individual (AI)
Large projects typically proceed in the following phases: Pre-project Planning, Conceptual Design, Preliminary Design, Final Design, Construction, and Project Closeout. Small projects often have scoping and estimating, design, construction, and closeout phases. It may be necessary to initiate a project multiple times due to changes in funding sources or due to the timing of authorizations required to proceed with the project.
