Project schedules are required for all projects. For the simplest of projects, a start and end date may suffice. In most cases, the project schedule is more detailed. The preliminary project schedule documents the duration of the project phases: planning, design and engineering, equipment acquisition, construction, and closeout. The preliminary schedule is also the basis for the cost plan developed by the Project Manager in the project planning stage.  The schedule is refined in the project planning stage based on subcontractor availability, equipment purchase lead time, etc.
