Factors that contribute to laptop battery swelling

  • The laptop runs hot due to airflow path obstructions; using it on your lap, pillow, or other surfaces that do not allow heat to dissipate
  • Overcharging; continuing charging when the battery is charged
  • Using the incorrect charger for the laptop
  • Storing a laptop in an area that is extremely hot or cold
  • The laptop is old

Action to take if the laptop battery starts swelling

  • If you see any sign of battery swelling, you should:
    • Power off the laptop
    • Unplug the charger from the laptop
    • Either contact your department IT admin, or LBNL IT (help@lbl.gov) and provide:
      • State the issue
      • Computer DOE number
      • If you would like a loaner, a repurposed system, or a new system - we can assist
      • Project-activity ID number

Warning

Continuing to use the laptop with a swollen battery increases the chance of a fire hazard and puts you at risk. You must replace them to comply with the Lab safety standards.
