Factors that contribute to laptop battery swelling

  • The laptop runs hot due to airflow path obstructions; using it on your lap, pillow, or other surfaces that do not allow heat to dissipate
  • Overcharging; continue charging when the battery is charged
  • Using the incorrect charger for the laptop
  • Laptop exposure to extreme temperatures
  • The laptop is old

Action to take if the laptop battery starts swelling

  • If you see any sign of battery swelling, you should:
    • Power off the laptop
    • Unplug the charger from the laptop
    • Either contact your department IT admin, or LBNL IT ([email protected]) and provide the following information:

Warning

Laptops with a swollen battery increase the chance of a fire hazard and puts you at risk. You must replace them to comply with the Lab safety standards.

Preventative steps to reduce the possibility of battery swelling

  • Use the correct charger for the laptop
  • Use the laptop on a surface that allows good airflow for heat dissipation
  • Store it in a dry/cool place when not using it
  • Avoid exposing the laptop to extreme temperatures
  • Use an external laptop fan
