Factors that contribute to laptop battery swelling

• The laptop runs hot due to airflow path obstructions; using it on your lap, pillow, or other surfaces that do not allow heat to dissipate
• Overcharging; continue charging when the battery is charged
• Using the incorrect charger for the laptop
• Laptop exposure to extreme temperatures
• The laptop is old

Action to take if the laptop battery starts swelling

• If you see any sign of battery swelling, you should:
  • Power off the laptop
  • Unplug the charger from the laptop
  • Either contact your department IT admin, or LBNL IT ([email protected]) and provide the following information:
    • State the issue - Battery is swelling
    • Computer DOE number
    • If you would like a loaner, let us know
    • If you would like a repurposed system or a new system - fill out the Request a Computer form and let us know you have filled out the form
    • Project-activity ID number

Preventative steps to reduce the possibility of battery swelling

• Use the correct charger for the laptop
• Use the laptop on a surface that allows good airflow for heat dissipation
• Store it in a dry/cool place when not using it
• Avoid exposing the laptop to extreme temperatures
• Use an external laptop fan
