Factors that contribute to laptop battery swelling
- The laptop runs hot due to airflow path obstructions; using it on your lap, pillow, or other surfaces that do not allow heat to dissipate
- Overcharging; continue charging when the battery is charged
- Using the incorrect charger for the laptop
- Laptop exposure to extreme temperatures
- The laptop is old
Action to take if the laptop battery starts swelling
- If you see any sign of battery swelling, you should:
- Power off the laptop
- Unplug the charger from the laptop
- Either contact your department IT admin, or LBNL IT ([email protected]) and provide the following information:
- State the issue - Battery is swelling
- Computer DOE number
- If you would like a loaner, let us know
- If you would like a repurposed system or a new system - fill out the Request a Computer form and let us know you have filled out the form
- Project-activity ID number
Warning
Laptops with a swollen battery increase the chance of a fire hazard and puts you at risk. You must replace them to comply with the Lab safety standards.
Preventative steps to reduce the possibility of battery swelling
- Use the correct charger for the laptop
- Use the laptop on a surface that allows good airflow for heat dissipation
- Store it in a dry/cool place when not using it
- Avoid exposing the laptop to extreme temperatures
- Use an external laptop fan
