Background
In August 2022, DOE Order 471.7 was incorporated into the Lab contract, requiring the Lab to establish a Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Program and document a policy for designating and handling information that qualifies as CUI. Based on this contract modification, a three year implementation plan was developed.
However, the marking and sending of CUI information, from a variety of outside senders, to the Lab began almost immediately after the order. There is now an immediate need for an interim solution to receive and store CUI while the longer term project is implemented. The IT Policy group reviewed NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2, Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations, and has implemented the following interim solution, inline with 800-171 requirements. A crosswalk is included in Appendix A.
