Factors that contribute to laptop battery swelling
- The laptop runs hot due to airflow path obstructions; using it on your lap, pillow, or other surfaces that do not allow heat to dissipate
- Overcharging; continuing continue charging when the battery is charged
- Using the incorrect charger for the laptopStoring a laptop in an area that is extremely hot or cold
- Laptop exposure to extreme temperatures
- The laptop is old
Action to take if the laptop battery starts swelling
- If you see any sign of battery swelling, you should:
- Power off the laptop
- Unplug the charger from the laptop
- Contact Either contact your department IT admin, or LBNL IT (help@lbl.gov) and provide the following information:
- State the issue - Battery is swelling
- Computer DOE number
- If you would like a loaner, let us know
- If you would like a repurposed system , or a new system - we can assistfill out the Request a Computer form and let us know you have filled out the form
- Project-activity ID number
