The Equipment Protection System (EPS) is a separate system whose purpose it is to protect storage ring and beamlines from catastrophic damage due to vacuum loss. It's hardware components are shutters, valves, vacuum pumps and vacuum gauges. Every beamline has it's own EPS system.
Beamline staff have only a very limited access to the EPS system. The main use from the beamline staff's perspective is the 'handshake' procedure, i.e. the final step in the beamline key-enable process that is managed by the ALS floor operators.
