Things to know related to resetting LastPass Master password:

  • Berkeley Lab IT and LastPass Support does not have the ability to reset or change the Master Password because the password is encrypted and the only recourse for a forgotten LastPass Master Password is to reset the account and start over
  • The following data will be deleted:
    • Sites
    • Secure Notes
    • Form Fill Items
    • Identities
    • Established Multi-factor Authentication Options
    • Approved Trusted Devices
    • Saved Credentials
  • The following data will remain:
    • Account Preferences
    • Your History




1Go to the website https://lastpass.com/reset_account.php and Click Reset

2A popup asking if you remember you LastPass master password will appear, click No

A warning message will appear stating that resetting your account will permanently destroy all of your data and will encourage you to export your Vault data before resetting if you know your Master Password. However, if you do not know the Master Password, it will not be possible

Enter your LastPass email address, then click Send Email

4Check your inbox for the email and follow the instruction to create a new Master Password

Set a new LastPass master password

LastPass Master Password best practices recommendation:

  • 12 characters minimum, longer the better
  • Use combination of upper case, lower case, numeric and special character
  • Make it pronounceable and memorable, but not easily guessed
  • Make it unique to you only
  • Do not use personally identity information

6Once you entered the new password, Click Reset

7Click Yes

8Click Yes again

9You are done


What to do next:

  • After you created your new Master Password, you can log back in and begin setting up your Vault again
  • If you have previously exported your LastPass Vault data, you can import the data

    If you have Vault data exported, make sure to keep this safe to yourself only. If it falls in to the wrong hand, they will have access to all of the data in it.
