POLICY
A. Purpose
Berkeley Lab employs persons in one of many different appointment types. This policy defines the terms and conditions of a limited appointment.
B. Persons Affected
This policy applies to non-represented employees. Represented employees should consult their collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
C. Exceptions
Requests that exceed what is allowed under current policy or that are not expressly addressed by current policy are considered exceptions to policy. A request for an exception to policy requires, at a minimum, the approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).
D. Policy Statement
Limited Appointment
An appointment established at any percentage of time, fixed or variable, during which an appointee is expected to be on pay status for up to a maximum of 900 hours in a 12-month rolling period. By exception per Section C of this policy, a limited appointee may be on pay status up to 960 hours in a 12-month rolling period. Limited appointments are most appropriate for short-term work with an expected end date.
Visiting Faculty. Visiting Faculty is a position for faculty members from universities and colleges outside the University of California system. The visiting faculty position is a limited appointment. For more information on the visiting faculty position, see the Visiting Faculty policy.
Rehired Retirees. Rehired retirees are University of California retirees hired into limited appointments. In addition to this policy, rehired retiree limited appointments must adhere to the Retired Employees, Re-employing policy.
An open recruitment is not required for a limited appointment. (See the Recruitment and Hiring policy.)
Conversion to Career
A limited appointment will be designated as a career appointment when the appointee:
Has attained 1,000 hours of qualifying service in a 12-month rolling period and
Has not had a break in service of at least 120 consecutive calendar days.
The career appointment designation will be effective the first of the month following appointment of 1,000 hours of qualifying service. Qualifying service includes all time on pay status in one or more limited appointments within the University of California system. On-call and overtime hours will not be included as pay status hours when computing qualifying service.
The probationary period for employees in limited appointments that convert to career appointments is covered in the Terms & Conditions of Employment policy.
Termination of Appointment
A limited appointee may be released at any time at the discretion of Berkeley Lab. However, Berkeley Lab must notify the appointee of an early release in writing.
A limited appointment will automatically terminate on the last day of the appointment unless there is an earlier separation or formal extension of the appointment in writing.
E. Roles and Responsibilities
Managers, supervisors, and employees have the responsibility to adhere to the provisions of this policy.
