Ethical Use of Laboratory Animals Training Course

All LBNL researchers who use laboratory animals and are listed on animal use protocols must take a course on the ethical use of laboratory animals . "Working with the IACUC" is the AWRC approved course, which is available through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program or through the AALAS Learning Library. It will take the average researcher approximately 60 minutes to work their way through these modules and take the exam at the end.
Instructions for accessing the CITI course can be found HERE; Upon completion you will receive a completion certificate that can be uploaded as a part of your HARP Account Request Form for new researchers, or emailed to [email protected] for updates in the HARP system.

Instructions for accessing the AALAS course are:

  • Go to AALAS Learning Library website
  • Register and create a password
  • Choose the "Libraries" selection on the left
  • Select "Animal Care and Use Courses."
  • Select "Compliance and IACUC Training"
  • Select "Working with the IACUC"

Proof that you've taken the AALAS course:  Note that the free site does not issue a certificate at the end, so those having completed the course will need to screenshot the final screen saying "Congratulations - You Passed", then upload it to their HARP researcher profile or send it to HARC staff for uploading. Please ensure that your screenshot includes a time stamp and your name in the upper right-hand corner.

Other Trainings Available

As LBNL is a DOE site, we have additional access to CITI training courses on specific aspects of laboratory animal care, such as Reducing Pain and Distress in Laboratory Mice and Rats. LBNL does not typically require this training, but we do recommend it as a tool if you are looking to expand your knowledge in Laboratory Animal Research.
