Be sure to have a backup of your computer before performing the troubleshoot

There are 5 methods to troubleshoot Windows 10 Update error:

  • Follow the method in the order that is provided
  • It will help save you time if you follow through these instruction first before contacting IT for assistance


Try restarting the computer and running Windows Update again

1Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Microsoftno image
2Launch the file WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab that you just downloaded and click on Advanced

3Make sure the "Apply repairs automatically" box is checked and click on "Run as administrator"

4The troubleshooter will relaunch. Select "Windows Update" and click Next

5Follow the onscreen instructions and restart the computerno image
1Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

2Click the Update now button to download the Update Assistant file

Once the file finishes downloading, run it and follow the on-screen instructions

Strongly recommend saving all your work first because more often than not, it will require a restart to complete the installation

If you do not know what specific KB update you are looking for, skip this step

1Go to Microsoft Update Catalog

Enter the name of the update you are trying to install. The name will begin with KB followed by 7-digit (ie: KB1234567)

3If you get more than one for your result. Look in the Products column and make sure it is for Windows 10 and in the title, make sure it has Windows 10 and x64-based Systems in it. Download it.

Run the file once it is downloaded and follow the onscreen instructions.

Download the Reset Windows Update file

You browser may give you a warning and say this is it a dangerous/un-trustable file, ignore it and download the file any way

Click on the image below to download it:

Locate the file ResetWindowsUpdate.bat in your download folder (or where ever you download the file to) and right click on it select "Run As Administrator"

Make sure to save all your work and exit all programs because you will be required to restart the computer

3Let the program run and be patient. It can take up to 10 minutes. Once the program finish running, restart the computer

Once the computer restarts, open up File Explorer and navigate the the folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

In there, the only item you should see is the SharedFileCache folder

If you see more than just the SharedFileCache folder, re-run the ResetWindowsUpdate.bat file

5Run Windows Update again and it should update properly nowno image
