Overview
Berkeley Lab runs a sophisticated Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect and block attacks to laboratory computers.
Unfortunately, the combination of the network configuration at conferences and large numbers of lab employees accessing the lab from the conference can make the conference network appear hostile. Berkeley Lab's IDS will then block the conference from accessing Berkeley Lab, thus denying lab attendees access to Lab resources, such as email and calendar.
In order to avoid this scenario it is necessary for the Lab's Computer Protection Program (CPP) to whitelist the conference IP address, which prevents it from being blocked by the IDS.
Whitelist Procedures
The first step is to acquire the public facing IP address or addresses of the conference network. Many times gathering the IP information can be done before the conference through technical staff at the conference location. Other times the IP address is not known ahead of time. In these cases we recommend a conference attendees browse to following web site: connect.lbl.govThis website shows the public IP address a client is using and has some basic instructions for unblocking.
Once the IP address has been acquired, send a request to the Computer Protection Program either by email at [email protected], or by calling the IT Help Desk at (510) 486-4357. Please include the following information in the request:
- Your name
- Conference name
- Conference location (e.g. hotel or conference center)
- IP address
- Start and end date of the conference
