Why Chrome OS?

In the last decade cloud computing has dominated the market. IT organizations are providing their customers with cloud services ensuring that applications and data are stored remotely making it easier for users to access their work from anywhere, at anytime using any device. This maximizes productivity and minimizes loss of data and time.

Berkeley Lab IT is continually striving to enhance computer security, provide a better user experience and lower costs to stretch dollars for science. One way to achieve all three objectives is the migration away from standard Windows or Mac computers and to a Chrome OS device. User authentication is simplified enabling users to only remember their Berkeley Lab Identity username and password. Chrome OS is ideal for users who utilize the G-Suite and live in a browser environment. Users that log into virtual environments like HPCS, Science Accelerator or AWS can utilize a cheaper and faster computing device to meet their computing needs.

Operations Chrome OS Migration

Beginning in FY2017, the Operations Desktop Support (ODS) program is piloting a project to move Operations users to Chrome OS. ODS has identified a group of users throughout Operations that can migrate to Chrome OS. As a result of this switch, computer hardware costs are down, collaboration between users using the G-Suite of tools has increased and security has improved. Chrome OS devices are centrally managed and can be easily wiped in cases of theft or loss. Operations users who would like to participate in the program are encouraged to request an assessment by submitting a ticket to [email protected]. The more participants the more dollars go towards science.

Digital Signage

Does your department or group need digital signage at an affordable price? Chrome OS is that solution. IT User Support is currently providing support to several Lab groups digital signage utilizing Chromebits and Chromeboxes. If you would like a demo or seek consultation submit a request to [email protected].
