While Berkeley Lab is working towards attaining full compliance with this order by August 2025, Federal Government agencies have started to mark information and documents as CUI. There is now an immediate need for an interim solution that allows Berkeley Lab employees to receive and store files marked CUI. There should be no marking of material as CUI by Lab employees at this time.

To that end, the IT Policy group reviewed NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2, Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations, and has implemented the following an interim solution, inline with 800-171 requirements. A crosswalk is included in Appendix A.

...

The interim solution is available to those Lab employees that either are receiving or anticipate receiving information marked as CUI in their inbox, or have a need to store CUI in a Google shared drive.

What to do if you have an immediate need to receive or store CUI?

We have developed an interim solution. The Interim CUI Receipt and Storage page, which requires authentication, has more details.

What to do if you have an immediate need to send CUI?

The options to send CUI are less developed at this time, they include:

  • to someone inside the Lab, use a CUI enabled Shared drive
  • to someone outside the Lab, contact [email protected] and we'll advise on a solution
  • to someone outside the Lab insisting you use Entrust, contact [email protected]

Interim CUI FAQ

We've build out an Interim CUI FAQ to answer questions as they arise.  Please note this page requires authentication.

We have developed an interim solution that allows Lab employees to apply for accounts configured to permit the receipt and storage of CUI. If you have a recurring need to receive CUI, you will need a CUI-enabled Gmail account. If you have a recurring need to retain or share CUI, you require a CUI-enabled shared drive.

If you have an urgent interim need to receive and store CUI, please see the following page, which requires authentication for more details:
