Berkeley Lab runs a sophisticated Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect and block attacks to laboratory computers.

In order to avoid this scenario it is necessary for the Lab's Computer Protection Program (CPP) to whitelist the conference IP address, which prevents it from being blocked by the IDS.
Whitelist Procedures
The first step is to acquire the public facing IP address or addresses of the conference network. Many times gathering the IP information can be done before the conference through technical staff at the conference location. Other times the IP address is not known ahead of time.
