One way to achieve all three objectives is the migration away from standard Windows or Mac computers and to towards a Chrome OS device. User authentication is simplified enabling users to only remember their Berkeley Lab Identity username and password. Chrome OS is ideal for users who utilize the G-Suite and live in a browser environment. Users that log into virtual environments like HPCS, Science Accelerator or AWS can could utilize a cheaper and , faster computing device to meet their computing needsdevices by adopting Chrome OS.

Operations Chrome OS Migration

Beginning in FY2017, the Operations Desktop Support (ODS) program is piloting a project to move Operations users to Chrome OS. ODS has identified a group of users throughout Operations that can migrate to Chrome OS. As a result of this switch, computer hardware costs are down, collaboration between users using the G-Suite of tools has increased and security has improved. Chrome OS devices are centrally managed and can be easily wiped in cases of theft or loss. Data is store on remotely therefore data loss is minimized. Operations users who would like to participate in the program are encouraged to request an assessment by submitting a ticket to [email protected]. The more participants the more dollars saved in Operations that can go towards science.
