    POLICY

    A. Purpose

This policy describes the use of Unpaid Personal Leave to eligible Berkeley Lab employees.

    B. Persons Affected

This policy applies to Career non-represented employees. Represented employees should consult their collective bargaining agreement.

    C. Exceptions

Requests for exceptions that exceed what is allowed under current policy or that are not expressly addressed by current policy are considered exceptions to policy. A request for an exception to policy requires, at minimum, approval by the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).

    D. Policy Statement

A Career employee may be granted unpaid leave for personal reasons. In granting such a leave, the Division Director will consider the best interests of Berkeley Lab. Reinstatement will be to the same or, at the Division's discretion, a similar position in the same Division provided that the employee returns to work immediately following termination of the leave. If the employee would have been laid off had the employee actually been working during the leave period, the employee will be afforded the same considerations afforded other employees who are laid off pursuant to the provisions of the Reduction in Force policy.

    E. Roles and Responsibilities

Managers, supervisors, and employees have the responsibility to adhere to the provisions of this policy.
