Introduction

1Password is a new password management solution offered to the Lab as an alternative to LastPass password manager and offers the same level of security as LastPass. Either may be used at your preference.

1Password has a lot to offer, here are the highlights:

  • Randomly generated passwords, saved to the cloud, allowing access to your passwords from any device after login to your 1Password account
  • Available for: Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, Linux, ChromeOS
  • Import of data from other password managers or accounts

1Password Best Practices

  • Use 1Password or LastPass, do not use both
  • Download and install the 1Password desktop app and browser extension to use autofill effectively
  • Enable 2FA as soon as possible - Set up Two Factor Authentication for 1Password
  • Always use a password generator to generate a password instead of creating the password yourself. User-created passwords are not as secure as a randomly generated sequence of characters. Generating and saving the password with 1Password will always be safer than creating a password yourself.
  • Ensure the password is saved to your password manager before continuing with account setup or password changes
  • Download your Emergency kit as soon as possible, in case you lose your secret key - View 1Password's Emergency Kit FAQ here
