Example of IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 is made up of 4 segments of number separated by a period. Each segment can have up to 3 numbers as such:

  • 0.0.0.0
  • 168.1.343.2
  • 1.33.22.332

IPv6 is made up of 8 segments of number and/or alphabet combined separated by a colon. Each segment contain 4 characters as such:

  • 2001:DE3B:8888:FDED:BBBB:33A2:A23W:3D3S
  • :: - implies all 8 segments are zero
  • ::332D:MX64 - implies first six segments are zero
  • PO04:QW12:97ZA:: implies last five segments are zero
  • YT88:2VR9::KEC7:109L - implies the middle segments are zero
