Overview

You can create short links of the form http://go.lbl.gov/yourshortlinkhere

Getting Started

Anyone can use go.lbl.gov to create short links by:

  1. Typing (or generating) a Link path
  2. Adding a Target path
  3. (Optionally) Adding managers other than yourself
  4. Click Add

Short links that already exist, and you are a manager of, can be updated or deleted.

Advanced option checkboxes and explanations:

  • Append path to target: This option is only meaningful where you have variable paths.  It won't do anything if you match a fixed path. If you create a link for "/testAppendPath" and give it a target (e.g., "https://commons.lbl.gov/foo") then select the "Append path to target" option, it will take /testAppendPath/ and whatever is added and append it to the target.

           Example:

           type go.lbl.gov/testAppendPath/1234

           will redirect to https://commons.lbl.gov/foo/testAppendPath/1234

  • Require authentication: For users to successfully redirect, they log in with their Berkeley Lab Identity credentials or must already be signed in.
  • Only temporary (302): By default, the Short linking service creates a 301 redirect, which is meant to be permanent move, as opposed to the 301 redirect, which is meant to be temporary.

Guidelines

Only Labwide services may use generic vanity short links.

For example, a single scientific division may not use http://go.lbl.gov/safety for its division safety page.

IT and Public Affairs may take back vanity short links that violate this guidelines.
