LBNL Main site (lbl.gov)
The LBNL main site uses an anycast address, back-ended by multiple nameservers, to handle dns requests depending on your location on the network. Using the anycast address provides automatic redundancy during maintenance periods on the nameservers. The vast majority of computers should use this anycast address and no second DNS server is required. If you are running a caching only nameserver forward to ns.lbl.gov.

ALS (als.lbl.gov)
ALS uses an anycast address backed by multiple nameservers located on ALS subnets. Using the anycast address provides automatic redundancy during maintenance periods on the nameservers. All ALS computers should use this anycast address and no second DNS server is required.

Managing DNS records
LBNL provides the IP request application, which allows users to add, change existing or deleted DNS records, as well as update host contact and location information.
Reserving a hostname
There are a very small number of situations where it is necessary to reserve a hostname. In the vast majority of situations, IP request allows near-real time modification. However, if you do need to reserve a hostname, create a cname pointing to reserved.lbl.gov.
