3. Posture/Habits Recommendations

Applications

3a. Advised to alternate from SITTING to STANDING every hour for 20 minute intervals or as needed

  • This would apply to a person that would benefit from standing for periods over the day

3b. Advised to take a REST BREAK at least 1 time per hour and to get up and walk about for 3-5 minutes to enhance circulation to the body

  • This would apply to a person who works at the computer for prolonged periods and does NOT TAKE HOURLY REST BREAKS

3c. Advised to take a REST BREAK at least every 60 minutes (or before fatigue is felt) and to get up from the computer and walk for about 5 minutes to enhance circulation to the body

  • This would apply to a person who needs more opportunities to move and recharge

3d. Advised to take a short STRETCH BREAK every 30 minutes (or before fatigue is felt) up and to get up from the computer and walk for 3-5 minutes every hour. 

  • This would apply to a person who needs more opportunities to move and recharge

3e. Advised to download RSIGuard BREAK REMINDER SOFTWARE PC Version.
Go to software.lbl.gov- enter 'RSI Guard' into the Search feature or look for it in the 'IT Supported Downloads' section

  • This would apply to a person who does NOT TAKE PERIODIC REST BREAKS while at the computer

3f. Advised to download RSIGuard BREAK REMINDER SOFTWARE for Mac

Go to software.lbl.gov- enter 'RSI Guard' into the Search feature or look for it in the 'IT Supported Downloads' section

  • This would apply to a person who does NOT TAKE PERIODIC REST BREAKS while at the computer

3g. Advised to try out  AUTO MOUSE CLICK software from RSI Guard.

  • This would apply to a person that reports MOUSE INTENSIVE work or 50% OR > MOUSE USE

3h. Advised to try out mouse DRAG LOCK feature to minimize holding the button depressed while moving the mouse, i.e., copy and paste, loading files in folders

  • This would apply to a person that reports frequent MOUSE CLICKING and DRAGGING

  • This would apply to a person that reports MOUSE INTENSIVE work or 50% OR > MOUSE USE or who wants to reduce mouse usage

3j. Explore ways to avoid looking down at the keyboard.  For example: place 'landmarks' or navigation points on the keyboard via use of sticky back Velcro pieces to help provide tactile cues of where your hands are on the keyboard

  • This would apply to a person who does not know how to touch type

3k. Advised to use LIGHT-TOUCH KEYSTROKES to activate keys and to monitor and reduce the "clacking" noise that would be indicative of applying too much force

  • This would apply to a person who uses of excessive FINGER FORCE ON KEYS and/or presents clacking noise that can be heard a few workstations away
