Project initiation consists of the processes that facilitate the formal authorization to start a new project or project phase. The project initiation processes and deliverables may include:

  • Pre-Project Planning
  • Project Origination
  • Preliminary Review and Assignment
  • Preliminary Project Scoping and Estimating
  • Project Scope of Work
  • Project Estimate
  • Project Schedule (preliminary)
  • Construction Directive Authorization (as applicable)
  • Risk Registry (as applicable)
  • Project Initiation Form / Project Planning Guide (PPG)
  • Assignment of Responsible Individual (RI) and Authorizing Individual (AI)

Large projects typically proceed in the following phases: Pre-project Planning, Conceptual Design, Preliminary Design, Final Design, Construction, and Project Closeout. Small projects often have scoping and estimating, design, construction, and closeout phases. It may be necessary to initiate a project multiple times due to changes in funding sources or due to the timing of authorizations required to proceed with the project.
