Purpose of knowledge article

  • Provide instructions on how to find your macOS hostname/computer name

Resolution

  • Normally, the hostname is the computer name with .local at the end of it
ie: if the computer name is apple-01, then the hostname will be apple-01.local
  • If the computer name contains spaces, the spaces will be replaced by hyphens
ie: if the computer name is my mac, then the hostname will be my-mac.local
1On the Finder menu bar, click Go

2Select Utilities
3Launch the Terminal application

4

Type hostname and hit the enter/return key on the keyboard

5

That is the hostname

Note

If you are often on the Lab VPN, the hostname may change due to the connection with the Lab VPN. So, if you are having an issue locating the hostname of your computer on a service all of a sudden, you will want to rerun the instructions while connected to the Lab VPN and try checking for that hostname.
