Example of IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 is made up of 4 segments of number divided by a period between each segment and each segment can have up to 3 numbers:

  • 0.0.0.0, 168.1.343.2, 1.33.22.332

IPv6 is made up of 8 segments of number and/or alphabet combined divided by a colon between each segment. Each segment contain 4 characters:

  • 2001:DE3B:3234:FDED:BB92:33A2:A23W:3D3S
  • :: - implies all 8 segments are zero
