There are two distinct steps to being authorized to work in the ALS’s High Pressure Laboratory.

  1. Each individual must receive in-person training and authorization to be in the room unescorted which includes all hazard awareness and expectations for behavior while visiting and working in our laboratory space. This basic access training is valid for 1 year.

  2. Each and every time you visit our laboratory space to perform work, you must also have an approved ESAF listing the exact dates and details of work you will be undertaking on that visit.

Step 1) will allow your badge to work on the door 24hrs a day for a year’s time, however you DO NOT HAVE open-ended approval to work in the room. You must have a valid ESAF to begin work.

If you would like to work in the HP lab during your ALS visit follow the following steps depending on your circumstances:

For all Users, regardless of circumstances:

Make sure you have requested to work in the High Pressure Laboratory on the ESAF that you submit for your experiment well in advance of your arrival.

    •  Answer the first question in Tab 5, “pre/post Experiment Plan” that “yes” you require time before or after your experiment; list “high pressure lab” as the resource you require; and request the appropriate amount of days before and/or after your scheduled x-ray beamtime.

    • If you are a BL 12.2.2 user, be sure to answer the question specifically related to HP lab access in Tab 4 “beamline” and indicate the number of days prior to your beamtime you are requesting.

If you have visited the ALS before but never worked in the HP lab:

If you have a valid (or expired) ALS badge and are already a part of the ALS User databases (you have an ALS-Hub login), adding HP Lab access is easy to do. Please take the online safety course linked at the bottom of this page, and be sure to take the short quiz at the end. This will trigger the HP lab manager to know of your interest and they will contact you about coordinating your brief in-person training when you are onsite. Please complete this training in advance of your arrival and ideally at least one week in advance of your hoped for start date/time in order to arrange your in-person training at a mutually agreeable time. Trainings are not available “on demand” without advanced notice, and are never available on nights or weekends.

If you have never worked at the ALS before:

If you are a new User to the ALS and need to receive all of your basic ALS access privileges from the User Office, adding HP lab access is easy, but must wait until after your basic access has been processed.  Please discuss with the beamline scientist contact at the ALS who is arranging your beamtime that you want to work in the HP lab, and they will get you in contact with the HP lab manager so that they are aware of your needs and will arrange for your access training at a mutually agreeable time. Trainings are not available “on demand” without advanced notice, and are never available on nights or weekends.

If you have worked in the ALS HP lab previously:

Please check whether your training for the HP lab is still valid (it is generally good for one year) and take the refresher training if needed to refamiliarize yourself with laboratory expectations. As a reminder YOU MAY NOT BEGIN ANY WORK IN THE HP LAB UNTIL YOUR ESAF FOR THIS VISIT TO THE ALS IS IN AN “APPROVED” STATUS.
