Berkeley Lab workers were surveyed in 2010 to gather information on their values, attitudes, and behaviors regarding safety. The survey results were analyzed and compared with organizations that are "best in class" for safety. The findings were shared with senior management, the divisions, the Safety Advisory Council, and the Division Safety Coordinators.

The survey responses for each division and Berkeley Lab as a whole are shown here. The questions fall into three categories:

  • Leadership
  • Structure
  • Processes and Actions

For each question, the response rate is shown with a dark-blue bar graph. The average response rate for the "best in class" organizations is shown with a light-blue bar graph. For each question, a high response rate is an indication of a strong Safety Culture.

The following traffic-signal indicator shows the comparison between the Berkeley Lab response rate and that of the "best in class" organizations.

  • Green: Response rate is at or near the rate for "best in class" organizations.
  • Yellow: Response rate is moderately below the rate for "best in class" organizations.
  • Red: Response rate is well below the rate for "best in class" organizations.

Using the results from the survey and other collected information, the divisions created initiatives to improve their Safety Culture. In addition, the Safety Culture Work Group identified initiatives that could be pursued at the Lab-wide level.
