Meso-scale Machining

The Shops have capabilities to produce precision meso-scale components, which typically have minimum feature sizes of around 25 micrometers, but in some cases we can machine features down to ~10 micrometers. Various processes are available including milling, drilling, turning and EDM.
Typical materials on which meso-scale features may be produced include, but are not necessarily limited to carbon steels, stainless steels, aluminum, brass and copper. Unlike MEMS micromachining, meso-scale machining allows the production of high aspect ratio features, including slots, pockets, holes, and contoured surfaces. Aspect ratios for drilled holes generally run around 5:1, but higher ratios may be achievable in some cases.
