Clarify the scope of the project. Data collection and analysis first, before planning.

Mike Barton
  • Everyone agreed that we would not create solutions yet, first of all we would focus on identifying what the problems identified in the survey were first.
  • Six sigma approach to this.

Retrospective on survey collection.

What worked well? What could be improved on?

Mike Barton
  • Not everyone was sure it applied to them and whether they should fill it out. Could have had multiple people send this survey out. This would allow people outside Michael Barton's network would have filled it in.
  • Some of the survey responses could have been text areas instead of text boxes. If the field was bigger, people might have felt like filling in a larger amount of text.
  • On the other hand having too much text would have made it more difficult to analyse.
  • Could have gotten the survey created faster - set a time frame for creating the survey so that we can act on people's interest faster. I.e. within the meeting get the survey created and finished. Give ourselves our own deadlines to help finish faster.
  • Have more frequent communications within the group and an action plan so once we roll out the initiatives.
  • Sending the survey out to test respondents and screening the survey within QAQC helped refine the survey.
  • A shared survey we could all edit.
  • Possibly people are getting tired of answering surveys so perhaps different avenues and asking responses in person.
  • Make sure people know that this is a JGI wide supported survey
10minFollow up and clarify goals for this data collectionMike Barton

Main goals identified

  • Identify operational, skill and tool inefficiencies within the JGI. What are the roadblocks and barriers people are having? This could be access to the right data, right tools, or right skills or right people.
  • Keep people engaged by identifying which learning styles are important and work for them.
  • Ensuring that people know that this is a JGI wide initiative. Support people for using their time for this.

All listed

  • Determine where people feel they could improve their skills.
  • Determine what hinders people within the JGI from getting their work done with data.
  • Identify areas within the JGI where people want to use data to augment their skills and what their current work.
  • Differentiate between the different skills people want to improve specifically
  • What part of data analysis do people think is important to them?
  • Identify if people want to reproduce their analysis
