From U.S. Embassy, Brazil

Brazil is rated critical for crime and in our on-going effort to keep Mission and TDY personnel safe, the Regional Security Officer (RSO) has identified a list of hotels that must be used when visiting Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Recife.  We receive daily reports of incidents against travelers, both American and Brazilian, ranging from credit card theft to armed robberies and assaults.  Many of these incidents occur at or near well known hotel chains.  For these reasons, the RSOs in each of these cities reaches out on a regular basis with the security directors of the hotels most commonly used by US Government employees and American executives.  The hotels have been selected based on several criteria that we believe will help keep traveling U.S. employees as safe as possible.

The U.S. Embassy will not authorize travelers who are not staying in RSO approved hotels. When preparing foreign authorizations in TREX, the following information will need to be provided in the "Trip Comments" field:

  • Hotel address
  • Confirmation number
  • Booking date
Note: Hotel name and phone number is entered within the "Host Information" field.
