    POLICY

    A. Purpose

    This policy provides guidance for obtaining pest control services at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

    B. Persons Affected

    This policy applies to employees or affiliates who work at Berkeley Lab.

    Not applicable

    D. Policy Statement

    Berkeley Lab's Integrated Pest Management program manages or prevents pest problems through proactive operational and administrative intervention strategies, such as the limited use of pesticides, to correct conditions that foster pest problems. Green pest control chemicals and processes are used whenever possible. Pest control is performed by licensed pest-control contractors.

    When required, call the Work Request Center at (510)486-6274, or submit a work order online.

    Pest Control Subcontractor

    • Provides all labor, materials, and equipment necessary for pest control
    • Removes dead animals and cleans areas where carcasses were found, including inside or under buildings, with the limitation that the carcass must be safe to handle and must weigh less than 50 pounds
    • Exterminates all noxious pests, including but not limited to insects, fleas, spiders, ants, bees, and rodents, from all Berkeley Lab buildings, except for the interior of the Berkeley Lab Guest House, Building 23
    • Humanely traps and removes raccoons, skunks, feral cats, and other animals as requested by the Work Request Center
      • No sticky or glue traps will be used at Berkeley Lab.
    • Upon arrival, reports to the Work Request Center and signs the sign-in log
    • Performs services in strict accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as U.S. Department of Energy and University of California/Berkeley Lab requirements, and in accordance with industry best practices

    G. Recordkeeping Requirements

    The Facilities Division Work Request Center enters the pest-control request into the Maximo Database, where records are kept on file for three years. Material Safety Data Sheets for all pesticides and chemicals are kept on file by the Environment, Health, Safety, and Security Division.
