The research of the theoretical particle physics group is concerned with the standard model and its extensions. We construct possible extensions of the standard model and develop new methods to compare theoretical models with experimental data, and to search for new physics in current and future experiments. The group's work includes perturbative QCD, quark and lepton flavor physics, electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetry, grand unification, neutrino physics, particle astrophysics, and cosmology. The LBNL theory group works jointly with the UC Berkeley theory group, forming the Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics, which also has substantial activities in formal theory, including string theory and quantum gravity.
