- Advantages: Windows shared folders are useful for local file sharing on the Lab network, as well as for collaboration on Access databases, FileMakerPro and other applications that are not suitable for web access.
- Disadvantages: There are a number of substantial limitations to sharing files through Windows Network File services. Users can only access Windows shared folders on-site or through a virtual private network, and they do not have the ability to create new top-level folders, nor assign permissions to them (although users can create folders within home or shared directories). Users seeking greater flexibility and functionality should consider other collaborative applications such as WebSpace, eRoom or GoogleDocs.
