Purpose of Knowledge Article:
Provide instruction on how to install Sophos Anti-virus on an Apple computer.
Resolution:
Before you start:
- It is strongly recommended that you close out all other software windows or at the very least minimize them as there will be a few popup windows during the installation that can easily be missed if you have other windows open.
- Read the entire instruction first.
This is the instruction for macOS Catalina:
| 1 | Download the Sophos Mac client from https://software.lbl.gov |

| 2 | Open the downloaded file and double-click on Sophos Installer |

| 3 | Click Open |
|
| 4 | Click Continue |
|
| 5 | Accept the license agreement and Continue |
|
| 6 | Enter your Mac user name and password and click Install Helper |
|
| 7 | Near the end, two prompts to Open Security & Privacy will come up. Click Open Security Preferences and click Close on the other window |
|
| 8 | When the below screen appears, click Close Note: this drag Sophos icon method DOES NOT work well |
|
| 9 | Go to Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder |
|
| 10 | Type in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus and click Go. The Sophos Anti-Virus window will open up. Leave that window open |
|
| 11 | Go back to the Security & Privacy window and select the General tab. Double-click the padlock at the bottom left, and enter your Mac username and password to unlock it. Click on the Allow button |
|
| 12 | Then click on the Privacy tab at the top, scroll down and select "Full Disk Access" on the left |
|
| 13 | Bring the Sophos Anti-Virus Finder window back into view (from Step 10). Drag the 3 items below from the Finder window into the Full Disk Access area on the right side:

| 14 | At the Sophos Anti-Virus Finder window, double-click on the "Tools" folder |
|
| 15 | Drag "Sophos Diagnostic Utility" to the Full Disk Access area as well |
|
| 16 | The Full Disk Access window should look like below, with SophosServiceManager below SophosCleanD. |

| 17 | Close all of the open windows and restart the computer. |

This is instruction for macOS Big Sur and newer, including Monterey:

| 1 | Download Sophos Anti-Virus Note: if you are prompt to log in with your Berkeley Lab Identity account, do so. |

| 2 | Go to your download folder and open up the LBL Managed Sophos 9.9.7 for macOS folder |
|
| 3 | Open the Sophos Installer.app file Note: reminder, close down all other software windows as there will be a few pop-up messages during the installation and can be easily missed. |

| 4 | Click Open |
|
| 5 | Click Continue |
|
| 6 | Check the box to Accept the Agreement |
|
| 7 | Click Continue | |
| 8 | Type in your computer password |
|
| 9 | Click Install Helper | |
| 10 | You will see the popup System Extension Blocked. Click Open Security Preferences |
|
| 11 | Click the Lock icon |
|
| 12 | Type in your computer password | |
| 13 | Click Unlock | |
| 14 | Click Allow | |
| 15 | If you are prompted to restart the computer. Click Restart Note: reminder, make sure you save and exit all other software you have before restarting |

| 16 | Once the computer startups, log back in. Locate Sophos Icon on the menu bar, |

| 17 | Click Update Now | |
| 18 | Let Sophos update, it will time some time, be patient |
|
| 19 | You will see another popup for System Extension Blocked. Click Open Security Preferences |
|
| 20 | Click the Lock icon to unlock it again |
|
| 21 | Click Allow | |
| 22 | You will see a popup Sophos Network Extension. Click Allow |
|
| 23 | You will see another popup for System Extension Blocked. Click Open Security Preferences |
