VoIP for Smartphones and Tablets

Use your smartphone or tablet to answer or make calls from your Laboratory extension wherever you are by adding a VoIP appearance of your extension.  Plus, you can avoid the cost of high cellular usage rates and roaming fees when traveling internationally.   Calling other Laboratory extensions is free!  Local, long distance and international calls are billed at LBNL phone service rates.

The cost for service is $9.50 per month, plus a one-time set up fee of $10.00. (There is also a small fee for downloading the SIP app, Acrobits, from Apple or Google.)

To order:

Send email to Telephone Services and include the following:

Your lab extension
Your cellular phone number
Your project ID

After receiving your order, Telephone Services will provide you with set up instructions.

How does it work?

VoIP service is available on Apple and Google devices and works over a cellular 3G/4G network or available WiFi.  By utilizing the cellular provider's data connection, you can make and receive internal or external calls from your Lab extension.  (Note: when traveling overseas, be sure to have Telephone Services move you to an international data plan.)

After Telephone Services has provisioned a VoIP port with your Lab extension, you will need to install a SIP app on your cellular device.  Telephone Services recommends Acrobits because it offers the best overall sound quality of all SIP apps tested.  Acrobits set up instructions will be provided by Telephone Services.

Recommendations for using Acrobits

  • Change your Acrobits ring tone. (See set up instructions for details.)
  • Have Telephone Services increase the number of rings on your extension to compensate for the one ring delay between the Acrobits app and your desk phone.
  • Turn off Acrobits app when not in use. It uses a lot of battery.

For more information, send email to Telephone Services or call ext. 7997.
