Years of Service

Years of Service

To view your years of service for vacation accrual rate and service milestone (pin), or place an inquiry, log on to Employee Self Service.

Years of Service for Vacation Accrual Rate

What is this used for? This is used to determine your vacation accrual rate. For example, if you have 10 years of service, you will accrue 12 hours of vacation per month.

How is it calculated? You earn a full month of service time for each month that you are appointed at 50% part time or more and on paid status for 50% or more of the month while at any of the employer(s) listed below. Otherwise, you will not earn service time for that month.

  • University of California (including Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory prior to 10/01/07 and Los Alamos National Laboratory prior to 06/01/06)
  • CA State agency
  • CA State University

Example: If you were 50% part time on paid status from January 1st through January 20th, you would earn 31 days of service time for January. If you were on an unpaid medical leave from January 1st through January 20th, you would not earn any service time for January.

To learn whether or not you are eligible to receive vacation, and view the vacation accrual rate chart, please access Berkeley Lab's vacation policy.

Years of Service for Service Milestone (pin)

What is this used for? This is used to determine your service milestone of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years. A service pin is awarded to you at the time you reach a milestone if you are in a Career, Term, Limited, or Postdoctoral Fellow appointment.

How is it calculated? You earn the exact amount of days of service time as the number of days you are employed at the employer listed below, regardless of the percent time for which you are appointed and whether or not you are on paid status or on an unpaid leave of absence (e.g., unpaid medical leave).

  • University of California (including Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory prior to 10/01/07 and Los Alamos National Laboratory prior to 06/01/06)
  • CA State agency
  • CA State University

Example: If you were on an unpaid medical leave from January 1st through January 20th and returned to work on paid status from January 21st through January 31st, you would earn 31 days of service time for January.

Note To Supervisor: If you receive a service pin for an employee and you are not sure if the milestone is correct, please give the service pin to the employee. The employee may have prior service at another qualified employer (listed above) that you may not be aware of. The employee can access Employee Self Service to report a discrepancy.
