Research Centers:

The Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) is one of the Department of Energy Innovation Hubs. Its mission is to generate carbon-neutral fuels efficiently using only sunlight and water or carbon dioxide and sustainable materials. A number of CSD scientists participate in JCAP, working on catalysts, transformations using materials assemblies, and interfacial chemistry.


Research Interests:

Dr. Sharp’s research is devoted to formation and characterization of functional semiconductor interfaces for applications in renewable energy, with a particular emphasis on solar energy conversion.  Central to this work is the establishment of relationships among structural, chemical, and electrical properties at semiconductor-based solid/solid and solid/liquid interfaces.

This work provides insight into materials interactions and defect properties through a combination of spectroscopic methods, including synchrotron X-ray techniques, time-resolved optical emission and absorption spectroscopies, and electrical measurements. This knowledge of energetic alignment, as well as charge transfer and trapping processes, is used to engineer interfacial properties by application of advanced deposition and processing methods.

Dr. Sharp’s research at JCAP is devoted to development of photocatalytic assemblies for solar fuels applications, with an emphasis on understanding and controlling charge transfer and trapping processes at semiconductor surfaces and interfaces.  This work includes fundamental studies of electronic structure and charge carrier dynamics in semiconductor photoelectrodes, investigation of interfacial phenomena in catalyst/semiconductor assemblies, and development of thin films that permit efficient and selective charge transport between components.

Dr. Sharp is the Thrust 3 Coordinator for Materials Integration and Components.
