Sophos not updating

Problem

On Sept 19, 2012 at 1:20PM Sophos released a bad definition that caused Sophos to be unable to update. This impacted all Windows Sophos installations at the Lab.

Am I affected?

To determine if you are affected, open "Sophos Endpoint Security and Control" from the Start menu. Below shows an example of a broken client.

Below shows an example of a working client, not the "Last updated" should be no more than 4 hours old.

Solution

First alternative 

Sophos has created a utility to fix Sophos.  Download and run the utility from here.

This utility takes about 30 seconds to run.

Use the verify section below to confirm all is well. If all is not well, proceed to the second lternative.

Second alternative

LBNL has created a utility to fix Sophos and applications that may be impacted. Download and run the utility from here.

This utility takes about 2 minutes to run; it will display the following window when complete.

     

Use the verify section below to confirm all is well. If all is not well, proceed to the third alternative.

Third alternative

The IT Division has a more comprehensive version of the first alternative utility. In order to run this utility you must install IBM Tivoli Endpoint Management (BigFix), which is available from the Laboratory’s Software Distribution site. Detailed instructions for installing IBM can be found here.  After installing BigFix, no further action is required. If this fails to fix Sophos after a few business days, please proceed to the last alternative.

Last alternative

Verification

To determine if you are fixed, first reboot your computer.  After a reboot perform a Sophos update by right clicking the Sophos icon (by the clock) and selecting "Update now" as shown below.

Next, open "Sophos Endpoint Security and Control" from the Start menu. Below shows an example of a correctly updating client. The "Last updated" date should be within four hours of the current time.
